EMDR Therapy in North Charleston
When talk therapy doesn't feel like enough
You've spent time talking through your experiences, understanding your patterns, and making sense of why you feel the way you do. But sometimes, understanding something intellectually doesn't mean you've fully processed it emotionally.
EMDR offers a different way to work through difficult experiences, helping reduce their emotional impact and change how they continue to show up in your life.
What is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy?
EMDR is a psychotherapy approach that uses bilateral stimulation (BLS), such as eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones, to support the processing of distressing memories and experiences.
EMDR can help reduce the emotional distress, negative beliefs, and physical sensations associated with difficult experiences.
Sometimes, even when we know something is in the past, our emotional and physical responses can make it feel like we're still experiencing it. EMDR helps you process these experiences so they can feel less overwhelming and have less influence over your present.
When understanding isn't the same as feeling differently
Our experiences can shape the way we see ourselves, navigate relationships, and respond to the world around us. Sometimes, those experiences leave us with beliefs, emotional responses, or patterns we'd like to change.
Together, we can work toward helping you:
✦ Feel less emotionally affected by difficult memories and experiences
✦ Develop a more compassionate and balanced view of yourself
✦ Let go of negative beliefs about yourself that have been difficult to shake
✦ Feel safer, more grounded, and more present in your everyday life
✦ Change emotional responses that no longer feel helpful or aligned with who you are today
✦ Feel more confident in yourself and your relationships
✦ Make more room for joy, connection, and experiences that feel meaningful to you
What to expect when starting EMDR Therapy
1. Starting with what’s weighing on you
We'll start by exploring what's been weighing on you, the experiences you'd like to work through, and how they may be affecting your life today. You don't need to know exactly which memories we need to focus on or have everything figured out before we begin.
2. Building tools and preparing for trauma reprocessing
Before beginning EMDR reprocessing, we'll spend time developing strategies and resources to help you feel grounded, supported, and better equipped to navigate difficult emotions. We'll make sure you have ways to manage what comes up both during and between sessions.
3. Changing how the past affects your present
When you're ready, we'll begin working through experiences that continue to affect you using EMDR. We'll move at a pace that feels manageable, regularly checking in along the way. As we go, we'll also explore how these experiences connect to your everyday life, relationships, and sense of self.
